The NeuPSIG Review Update Study Group have published new guidelines for the treatment of neuropathic pain, which were last updated in 2015. A number of PAINSTORM members were involved in writing this paper, along with other researchers, clinicians, and patients.

The review of evidence from over 300 randomised controlled trials was published in May and can be read in full on The Lancet website. Using the GRADE framework for assessing the certainty of evidence from research studies while also taking into account risk of bias in the studies, the group looked at advances in pharmacological treatment and neuromodulation techniques. Strong recommendations (with moderate to high certainty of evidence) for first-line treatment remains unchanged; however, the paper stresses out that, overall, outcomes are modest and uncertainty remains for some treatments. This could be addressed with further adequately designed clinical trials.
